Meet Jensen – Leukemia Warrior

Just weeks before his 4th birthday, Jensen had already faced more challenges than most people will encounter in a lifetime.
This energetic toddler was diagnosed with a rare, high-risk form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July of 2025 after doctors discovered genetic mutations driving his cancer. Those mutations meant Jensen would require an especially aggressive chemotherapy regimen, beginning a journey that would quickly transform life for his entire family.
As his mother, Bridget, recalls, “Almost one year ago, my precious three-year-old son was diagnosed with a rare, high-risk form of leukemia. In an instant, my worst nightmare became a reality.”
Since then, Jensen’s treatment has been relentless. Chemotherapy has left him severely immunocompromised, requiring more than 40 blood and platelet transfusions. He battled a fungal infection in his lungs, experienced frequent hospitalizations for fevers, and at one point developed chemotherapy-induced neuropathy that temporarily took away his ability to walk.
Jensen was nonverbal before his diagnosis, but his treatment made it even harder to communicate the frustration of losing his mobility. Simple moments became overwhelming, and his family watched as the side effects of treatment changed not only his body, but also his ability to express himself. Through physical therapy and continued treatment, he has slowly regained his strength and is now walking again, a milestone that has brought hope to everyone around him.
Despite everything he has endured, Jensen continues to amaze everyone. He has courageously faced port accesses, procedures, and long days at the hospital with remarkable strength. He’s even grown so comfortable with his care team that when one nurse jokingly told him she wanted to take him home, Jensen believed her, and was so disappointed when she didn’t!
His treatment schedule remains demanding. Living nearly two hours from the hospital, Jensen and his mother make the long drive multiple times each week for chemotherapy, physical therapy, and follow-up appointments. Some months require four outpatient visits every week, while others involve lengthy infusions that keep them away from home for days at a time.
There have been bright spots along the way. One of Jensen’s immunotherapy treatments gave his family a glimpse of the little boy they had been missing. His energy returned, his personality shined, and, as his mom described it, he became a “wild man” once again. Those moments serve as precious reminders of the playful toddler still fighting beneath the weight of cancer treatment.
Bridget shared, “Since his diagnosis, Jensen has endured more than any child ever should. He has undergone countless procedures, lumbar punctures, aggressive chemotherapy, and multiple hospitalizations due to illnesses caused by his weakened immune system. Because of the genetic mutations driving his leukemia, his doctors have had to use intensive treatments to give him the best chance at beating this disease. While these treatments are saving his life, they have also taken a tremendous toll on his tiny body, even affecting his ability to walk at times.”
How We Helped
Bridget shared, “Jensen has spent more time in hospitals and traveling to appointments than he has at home. As his full-time caregiver, I have been unable to return to work, placing an enormous financial strain on our family.”
Beyond financial assistance, the family’s case manager has become a steady source of encouragement and emotional support, helping Bridget navigate the challenges of caring for a child with cancer while raising three other children. The family has also received free educational publications that have provided valuable guidance and trusted information throughout Jensen’s treatment.
She continues, “The support of organizations like The National Children’s Cancer Society has been nothing short of a blessing. Their assistance has helped ensure that we can continue getting Jensen to the appointments and treatments he desperately needs. They have lifted the overwhelming burden of wondering how we would make it to the next appointment, allowing us to focus our energy where it belongs: on Jensen and his fight against childhood cancer.”
